The Cash-Pay Pathways Study

There's more than one way to fill a cash-pay practice.

What does that look like across real practices?
Map your top cash-pay offer, see the path people take to find you and become patients (all on one page), and help build the evidence practice owners have been missing.

Takes about 8 minutes. No preparation required.

Why this research

Recently, a colleague and I were talking about how common it is to hear “this is the way to get patients for your cash-pay practice,” and they asked a simple question: what’s the evidence to support that?

More often than not, the “evidence” is one person’s success story, shared without the details behind it.

Maybe the strategy works, but what’s missing from the claim is context: under which circumstances does the strategy work?

So I decided to start collecting it. My goal is to bring the same standard of “evidence-based practice” that we hold for our patients to the tactics and strategies we use in our businesses.

The first step is understanding the different paths practices take to get and keep patients for their cash-pay services. After years of working with practice owners across disciplines, here’s what I’ve seen: there’s more than one path. This research will help describe what those paths look like in real practices.

The question I’m trying to answer is: What paths do practices use to get and keep cash-pay patients and clients, and what patterns emerge across practices of different sizes, stages, and structures?

How will I find the patterns?

I’ll use a short Practice Snapshot to understand the context of your practice, and an Offer Map to see how one of your cash-pay programs or services works.

An Offer Map is a one-page picture of your patient journey: how people find you, choose you, receive care, and send you their friends. It also shows who is responsible for each part.

Your Map puts the pieces that usually live in your head, your Google Drive, or on sticky notes around the office on one page, so you can see how they connect.

Who I’m looking for

Healthcare practice owners who:

  • Operate outside of hospital systems or large corporate groups
  • Are responsible for business decisions
  • Offer at least one cash-pay program or service (hybrid practices that still take some insurance are welcome)
  • Deliver care in person, virtually, through mobile or concierge care, or a mix

Across disciplines, including chiropractic, dentistry, functional and integrative medicine, mental health, medicine (physicians, NPs, and PAs), PT, OT, SLP, and more.

If you own a healthcare practice and make decisions about how your cash-pay services run, your insight can help me understand these patterns.

How it works

  1. Complete the Practice Snapshot (about 2 minutes). A few questions about your practice, so I can look for patterns across practices of different sizes, stages, and structures.
  2. Complete your Cash-Pay Offer Map (about 6 minutes). Map the cash-pay offer that currently brings in the most revenue. Your Map appears on screen as soon as you finish, and you can download it right away.

No preparation required.

Your Map shows what you’ve described, with no grades or scores, because there’s more than one way to build a cash-pay pathway. The research will explore the patterns and the circumstances around them.

What you get

  • Your own Cash-Pay Offer Map. See how people find you, choose you, receive care, and send you their friends, and who’s responsible for each step.
  • A first look at the findings. Join me on Wednesday, December 9 at 4pm ET for a private session where I’ll share what I’m learning about the paths practices use and the differences across practice sizes, stages, and structures. Contributors will hear the findings before they’re shared publicly. Can’t make it live? You’ll get the recording.

About me

I’m TaVona D. Boggs, PT, founder of Beyond Patient Care, an operations intelligence and consulting firm.

I spent nearly 20 years on the patient care side of healthcare, as a PT, a clinic director, and the owner of a healthcare contracting company. Now I’m on the business side, helping practice owners make more money from their cash-pay services without making their practice more complicated.

The Map is based on a process I’ve used and refined with clients over the years to help them see how their cash-pay services really bring in patients.

Your privacy

I’m personally analyzing every response for this research to identify patterns. Rather than sharing anyone’s individual responses, I’ll report what I learn from the group as a whole.

Revenue questions use ranges rather than exact amounts, and your individual answers, name, and practice name won’t be shared publicly.

Questions

Do I have to be a 100% cash-pay practice?
No. Hybrid practices are welcome, as long as you offer at least one cash-pay program or service.

Which offer should I map?
The cash-pay offer that currently brings in the most revenue.

Can I map more than one offer?
Yes! For the research, please map your top offer first. After that, you’re welcome to come back anytime and map another offer for your own use. Additional Maps aren’t included in the research.

Do I need to pull numbers or reports?
No. Everything is multiple choice or a short answer, based on what you know about your practice today.

Why should I use the same email address for both?
It lets me connect your Practice Snapshot with your Offer Map, so I can understand your Map in the context of your practice.

Will I be added to an email list?
Only if you choose to. You’ll get a confirmation email after you submit the answers to create your Map, and you can simply ignore it if you’d rather not join. You’ll still be able to download your Map and get an invitation to the private First Findings session.

Is there a deadline?
To be included in the first findings, shared at the private session on November 18 at 4pm ET, please complete it by November 9. The research is ongoing, so you’re welcome to contribute after that, too. Later contributions will be included in future findings.

Interested in contributing?

Your participation is part of a larger effort to bring evidence-based practice to how we run our businesses, not just how we care for our patients.

Thank you in advance,
